Process Work in a nutshell
- Process work emerged in the 1970s through the psychotherapeutic work and research of Arnold and Amy Mindell.
- It has its roots in C.G. Jungian analytical psychology, humanistic therapies such as Gestalt therapy, body psychotherapy and indigenous knowledge.
- Process work is a method characterised by its focus on experiences of change in the here and now. By making new experiences in contact with oneself and a compassionate therapist, processes of change are triggered so that old patterns can be released.
- An important basic therapeutic principle is that the solution is contained within the problem itself.
- Through appreciative, joint exploration of a stressful event, a dream, a body symptom, a relationship problem, this solution may reveal itself.
- Body, mind and soul form a unity of complex and diverse interactions. Arnold Mindell therefore saw the need to expand C. G. Jung's classical ‘talking cure’ to include the language of the body (facial expressions, gestures, movements, symptoms) and experience-based methods. This can initiate processes of change that are often more profound and lasting in their effect.
- By giving greater awareness to messages from the body and including them in the therapeutic process, a holistic approach is created that gives the human experience in its fullness the necessary appreciation.
- Arnold and Amy Mindell also recognised that psychological, mental and physical illnesses are a form of communication of the unconscious, which may not only tell us about the origin and development of the illness and suffering, but above all may contain the potential of directional impulses for a meaningful and fulfilled life. This does not change the reality of an illness or suffering, but the circumstances in which they occur can be re-examined and re-evaluated.

My approach
- "A person wants to know the destination to which their path leads, but they cannot know it if they do not turn around and go back to their origin and take this origin into their being. If they don't want to be a stick tossed about by the current, they must become the river itself, the whole river, from its source to its entrance into the sea. Turn back now completely and seek the first beginning and what lies before the beginning. There lies your hope of strength." (Earthsea, Ursula K. LeGuin, 130-1)
- At the outset of our work together, stands building trust and receiving support in finding one's way in this new space, creating security and the necessary stabilisation to be able to dive deeper.
- This happens in a warm, open and trusting atmosphere.
- I listen to you in a conscious way with all my senses and notice your body signals (voice, facial expressions, gestures) in order to include them in the process.
- I ask questions that support you in effectively deepening your process of self-exploration. Psychoeducation can also play an important part in helping the mind to understand.
- Over the course of our work together, we will address current issues, touch on the origins of your life story and your being, and trace the potentials that still lie hidden within you.
- There can be moments of silence to leave space to what lies behind the expression.

- In consultation with you, I use various methods through which you can come into deeper contact with inner parts, dream figures, body symptoms, feelings and thought patterns. These can include movement, touch, painting, dancing, sounds and role play.
